Harris Corporation Announces Strategic Alliances between Harris® PR&E® Studio Business and Radio Automation Vendors

Harris PR&E® VMQuadra Radio Automation Interface Extends Workflow Options for Radio Broadcasters

PHILADELPHIA, September 23, 2009, NAB Radio (Booth 303) — Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, has entered into strategic business relationships with multiple leading radio software and automation vendors to extend digital studio workflow options for broadcasters.  The relationships will allow vendors to interface their radio automation systems to the Harris® PR&E® VMQuadra™, the latest entry in the company’s range of PR&E VistaMax™ audio management systems.

Introduced at the 2009 NAB Show, VMQuadra is an elegant interface between VistaMax digital studio networks and radio automation systems.  The radio automation software interface was designed in alliance with leading automation vendors to increase functionality, reduce complexity and create new workflow options to and from automation servers, digital audio workstations and satellite systems.  Harris will collaborate with automation vendors including RCS, Broadcast Electronics (AudioVAULT), ENCO Systems, WideOrbit, OMT Technologies, BSI, Pristine Systems and WireReady.

“Keeping audio digital leads to better quality and lower operational costs,” said Neal Perchuk, vice president of sales, USA and Canada, for RCS.  “Our customers always benefit from more options, and Harris has taken a fresh new approach at moving digital audio.  RCS’s NexGen Digital Automation is the perfect counterpart to the VistaMax product.  The effort to expand digital audio over studio networks for our customers is what led to our collaboration with Harris.”

Each VMQuadra interfaces with up to four automation computers and connects via Cat5 to VistaMax audio management system frames.  The complete solution provides greater flexibility in audio source and destination connectivity, and minimizes the complexity of the distributed computer network and the number of audio channels required for each automation computer.  Sharp cost reductions are realized through the elimination of expensive audio cards for automation systems.

“Broadcasters are all about control these days, especially when it comes to costs and facilities,” said Don Backus, vice president of sales and marketing for ENCO Systems.  “The incorporation of VMQuadra into our DAD and Presenter systems will allow broadcasters to control costs by reducing labor and installation costs on studio buildouts, and increasing control of audio playout and routing within their facilities.  ENCO Systems and Harris have a long track record of working together, and broadcasters can expect innovative, technically solid integrated solutions at realistic economic scales based on the combined power of these two systems.”

The centerpiece of the Harris networking and infrastructure equipment range for the radio broadcast industry, the VistaMax audio management system provides routing and connectivity across the radio broadcast studio to more efficiently share resources while reducing costs associated with traditional audio routing systems. VistaMax serves as the core for PR&E digital network studios using RMXdigital® and NetWave® digital radio consoles.

“The Harris PR&E brand has long supplied the radio broadcast industry with a variety of consoles and diverse audio networking solutions that serve the smallest independent stations to major market, multi-studio facilities and networks,” said Tim Thorsteinson, president, Harris Broadcast Communications.  “Harris is now extending the versatility of the PR&E brand by working with today’s leaders in radio software and automation to ensure that broadcasters are getting the most mileage out of their on-air and production workflows.”

Harris Broadcast Communications offers products, systems and services that provide interoperable workflow solutions for broadcast, cable, satellite and out-of-home networks.  The Harris ONE™ solution brings together highly integrated and cost-effective products that enable advanced media workflows for emerging content delivery business models.
