Participants news21 december 2009 Harris Corporation Receives 2009 Illinois Governor’s Award for Continuous Improvement in Environmental Sustainability Marks Fifth Such Award Harris Has Received for Efforts in Reducing Environmental Impact QUINCY, Ill., December 17, 2009 —Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, announced that its Quincy, Ill., manufacturing facility has received a 2009 Illinois Governor’s Award for Continuous Improvement in Environmental Sustainability. This award recognizes the ongoing “green” efforts at the Quincy site to improve the environment. The award is the fifth such honor Harris has received, coming on the heels of the Most Valuable Pollution Prevention Award the facility received from the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable in 2008. "The culture at our Quincy manufacturing facility is one of continuous improvement,” said Chris Parsons, vice president, operations and supply chain, for Harris Broadcast Communications. “We take the responsibility of environmental stewardship very seriously. Our workforce is always looking at new ways to improve operations. This, in turn, improves the quality of the products we develop and the overall cost-effectiveness." Harris received the 2009 award based on achievements that include: ● Reducing the consumption of non-contact cooling water by approximately 18 million gallons per year. ● Cutting by more than 75 percent sludge volumes through modification of wastewater treatment. ● Decreasing by more than 75 percent consumption of sodium hydroxide, as well as eliminating ferric chloride, sodium metabisulfate and calcium chloride in the new treatment approach. “We strive to be recognized as a company that exhibits a strong commitment to promoting a sustainable future,” said Brian Cabeceiras, vice president of strategic marketing and technology for Harris Broadcast Communications. “We are emphasizing lower power consumption across all of our facilities and reduced carbon footprint across our range of products. This benefits not only Harris and the community, but also our customers, as they work to reach their own in-house environmental goals.” Harris has a long-standing commitment to pollution prevention and protecting the environment. With the 2009 award win, the company's Quincy operation now holds five Illinois Governor's Awards, having previously received the Illinois Governor's Pollution Prevention Award four times. The Quincy operation also has received a Community Green Award for its efforts in recycling and waste volume reductions, and an Industrial Achievement Award from the Illinois Association of Water Pollution Control Operators. Today, Harris employees around the world remain actively engaged in sustainability issues such as product take-back, recycling, resource conservation and material substitution. The Governor's Sustainability Awards were presented by the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC) in Champaign. ISTC is a division of the Institute of Natural Resource Sustainability at the University of Illinois. Since 1987, ISTC has presented Governors awards to organizations in Illinois that have demonstrated a commitment to environmental excellence through outstanding and innovative sustainability practices.
